xx Hi guys, I'm Mortimer Cool!

Posted May 08, 2008, 01:43:20 am by Mortimer Cool
Hi, guys! My name is Mortimer Cool. I'm a close friend of TREG's. As his best buddy, I volunteered to help out here at this ol' web commune, 'cause I just love the idea of community, and coincidentally, environmentally conscious jRPGs!

Here's the thing. As you may have guessed from my sig, photo, and avatar, I'm a bit of a hippie. I went to school at Swarthmore College and majored in Latin American political studies. I dodged the draft and moved to Guatemala in the late 70's, and I've been traveling through the world ever since. I hate America and I refuse to come back to it, and I'm also not much of a fan of Christmas. I worked with the Black Panthers and I'm a certified live mine removal technician. I'm also fully certified sociologist and am more than qualified to take care of any 'social issues' that arise in the community, baby! I did study with the Abelam tribes of southern New Guinea, you know! And they eat frickin' heads, daddy-o.

But I'm not just here to help out with this sweet practice in community development you cool cats got going on here. In the interests of charity to the disadvantaged masses of our land, I'm going to give you guys a bit of a challenge.

Between now and May 24th, (the anniversary of the first Morse Code message!), I am currently residing in a large city in a foreign country - well, foreign meaning 'not America'. I plan to leave that night at exactly 12 AM! However, you'll have time to catch me first. At random times in my posts (I will be posting, as I do like to talk) I will be dropping clues as to my hideout. Your job is to find not only the city and country where I am in, but my EXACT ADDRESS.

Sounds hard, right? Not quite, baby. I'll be dropping enough clues in my messages that you'd have to be a real square not to find 'em out! Enlightenment, brothers, it's what I'm all about.

You'll also need to find my telephone number and leave a message saying 'Hey, Mortimer! I found you!' Actually, I don't care what you say as long as you give me your forum name and tell me you've won. You'll also need to leave my address in the message. That way, I'll know my cover is blown and be forced to move on.

The winner of the contest will win a sponsorship - and possibly other goodies!

So get hunting, guys!

xx Project Forum Rehashing

Posted May 02, 2008, 10:54:28 am by missingno
But first, allow us a moment of silence to remember our fallen heroes.

Volrath and arevulopapo have stepped down as moderators.

Volrath has been with us for a long time, rising to fame as one of the two creators of Master of the Wind, perhaps the best and most well-known RMXP game. He's been moderating in the project forums since before the administration change, and it's been great having him help us out around here.  Arevulopapo was one of the first moderators that we added and he helped us with the transition. He has been helping out in the scripting forums, and we thank him for his time too. Both of them are moving on with their lives and no longer have time for moderating the forums. In recognition for their help, they're both being made sponsors.

Good news though, SephirothSpawn has once again been reinstated as a moderator of RM General Support, RGSS/2 Support, RM Tutorials, and Submitted Scripts & Requests. Also, Gratheo is now a support member, specializing in the graphics forums.

The Project Discussion subforums are being changed.

For a while now (actually for a very long time, even before the administration switch), the project forums have been both the strong point and the weak point of this community. There are lots of great projects and lots of great members that are helping those projects get even better. But at the same time, there are lots of bad projects and lots of members ready to ignore them or insult them. Even worse, there are a lot of project creators who use this forum as a place to simply advertise their games and seemingly have no desire to really make the best games they can.

We want a community that really encourages feedback and support. To further reach for that goal, we're updating the project subforums to be more geared towards constructive criticism and feedback. The first of these changes is well under way. Take a look at the new rules in the Early Project Development subforum, here and another topic about the changes here. The changes have already begun, and a number of topics have already been posted under the new rules and benefited from the changes.

And lastly, I need to move onto a less pleasant piece of business.

Necroposting has become a real problem in our community.

Necroposting is the act of posting a contentless post in a topic that has become inactive, or, more accurately, one which has not been posted in for about 2-3 months. Unfortunately, this has gotten out of hand in this community, despite repeated notices and warnings, including flashing banners at the top of each page. Because of this, we have begun to crack down on this problem.

This is a reminder for everyone: Do not Necropost. You will be BANNED if you do so. The bans are short, a few days to a week depending on how old the topic was. But seriously, we hate to treat our community like this. We're not rule-nazis, and we don't like to play the part. And on its own, necroposting is really not a big deal. But recently -- and we don't even know why -- members have been doing it a lot. We want a nice clean forum, and this kind of crap has to stop.

You are only allowed to post in an old topic if you yourself have started it, and only if you have something meaningful to contribute or new content to add. If you see a topic which has been necroposted in, please report it. If you use the Search function to find a topic, please CHECK THE DATE of the last post made before replying to it! And if you have a question about an old, outdated script, please make a new topic in RGSS Support. Otherwise, there should be no need to bring up old business.

The necroposting thing doesn't even apply to most of you guys, so keep up the good posting and I have to say that we're glad to see a lot of the members going along smoothly with the project changes. We're really beginning to turn this place into the great community it can be. That about covers it! Thanks everyone.

xx New Moderators! :O

Posted April 23, 2008, 09:13:55 pm by missingno
Do people even read introductions to news posts? I know why you're reading this topic, so let's cut to the chase, shall we?

First off, Arbiter and Etheon have been given support member status in recognition for their helpfulness around the forums. Congrats, guys, enjoy your shiny pink (it's salmon!) names.

Two other support members are going to be dropping the pink (salmon >:|) in favor of moderator blue.
Luminier will be helping out in Project Discussion and its subforums as well as RM Discussion.
khmp will have moderation power in RGSS/RGSS2 Support and Submitted RGSS/RGSS2 Scripts.

The next is a guy who is jumping right into the moderation scene. Hopefully he'll be up to the grueling task.
Miek will be in charge of the General Discussion and the Video Games forums.

Next up we have two guys whp have technically been staff for a while. They've been the directors of the Academy, but this is their first time with power in the main forums.
Brewmeister will be helping out in RMXP/RMVX General Support.
Sophist will be helping out in the Symposium and Other Entertainment.

Lastly we have someone you might not be too familiar with... more on that after I introduce him.
Jeff will be acting as a moderator for the Project Discussion subforums.

Wait, what? Who is this Jeff character?

Jeff is a guy who we've hired to manage our finances, namely the RMXP Paypal and sponsor donations. I got an email the other day from a guy in Nigeria who was having money problems. Fortunately, he said that he had worked at a bank for years and he'd be able to help me out with anything I needed in return for some access to money (ie. the poor guy needed a job). We're paying him $20 a month and giving him total access to our paypal to handle donations and the like.

Not really. He's a real cool guy and we trust him a lot.  Jeff has been a moderator on Gaming World's forums for four years. Don't think that we normally give moderator status to members with so little posts. We're bringing him in as a "special guest referee" of sorts, and it's really cool that he's offering his time to help us out (or perhaps he's just trying to extend his reach and become an internet overlord).

For a long time now, we've been wanting to restructure the subforums of the Project Discussion forum. To put it plainly, we haven't seen the kind of constructive feedback and posting that we'd like to. This isn't to say that there hasn't been any constructive posting at all (there is!), but we'd like to see a lot more of it. For example, I've seen a lot of project threads where the creator doesn't want to reveal too much about his game because he's worried about "spoilers". That sort of thing discourages real feedback. We're a forum for game-creators, not just game-players. We're going to be making some changes to reflect that, and Jeff is an added moderator to help the rest of the staff smooth that transition.

We'll have more details about that in the future! So get on with your predictable "congratulations" and "i called it" posts.
